Recently, Ferd and I had the honor of standing in front of the graduating class at Metropolitan State University of Denver to receive the Marathon Award.

It was a moment filled with gratitude. Not just for the recognition, but for the reminder that nothing meaningful is ever built alone.

Behind every milestone, there are people. Community. Support. Belief.

And as I stood there, looking out at the graduates, I kept thinking the same thing:

No one arrives at this moment in a straight line.

There are always moments of doubt.
Moments when things don’t go as planned.
Moments when part of you wants to keep going… and another part isn’t so sure.

And yet, somehow, you keep moving forward.

That’s what I wanted to speak to that day.

Second chances.

Not the kind we wait for.
The kind we choose.

Because life will not unfold exactly the way you expect it to.
There will be pivots.
There will be setbacks.
There will be seasons where you feel uncertain, off track, or even lost.

And in those moments, what matters most is not what’s happening around you…

It’s how you respond to what’s happening within you.

There is a concept from Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, that has stayed with me. He teaches that beneath the noise, beneath the fear, beneath the doubt… there is a core part of who we are.

He calls it the Self.

And when we are connected to that Self, we lead from a very different place.
From calm.
From clarity.
From compassion.
From courage.
From curiosity.

Not perfectly.
But intentionally.

A second chance is not about becoming someone new.

It’s about returning to who you already are.

Beneath the pressure.
Beneath the expectations.
Beneath the voice that tells you you’re not enough.

A second chance is the moment you pause… and choose again.

To respond with courage instead of fear.
With curiosity instead of judgment.
With compassion instead of criticism.

And here’s the truth:

You will have that opportunity again and again.

Because growth doesn’t happen in a straight line.
It happens in the moments when you realize you’re off track… and are willing to realign.

So whether you are graduating, starting over, or simply standing at a crossroads in your own life, this is what I want you to remember:

You don’t have to have it all figured out.

You just have to stay connected to yourself.

Trust that you can pause when you need to.
Trust that you can begin again when things don’t go as planned.
Trust that who you are—at your core—is enough to guide you forward.

Because your life will not be shaped by how many times you get it right…

But by how many times you have the courage to begin again.
