00:00:00 Christy: Welcome to Second Chances with Christy Belz podcast. I’m your host, Christy Belz. Enjoy our array of talented, openhearted guests and their thoughtfully curated stories of Second Chances, life-changing choices and new perspectives. We are here to empower you on Second Chances in your life.
00:00:38 Christy: Okay, I guess… I always say this, but I really, really am extremely excited for my guest today. Miss Cathy Hawk, she is the founder of Clarity International, a remarkable organization that focuses on energy and a Get Clarity operating system, which is some of the most unique, amazing work that I have seen, practiced and used. As a matter of fact, Cathy happens to be my Clarity coach. Someone that I go to on a regular basis to check in and see what’s working and what’s not working, what lights me up and what doesn’t. I’m so excited to get to share Cathy Hawk with you today, her journey of what brought her into this amazing work all these years ago, and what her tips are and advice for you moving forward. So please welcome, Cathy Hawk.
00:01:31 Christy: Hi, Cathy.
00:01:32 Cathy: Hi, Christy and everyone listening.
00:01:35 Christy: Yeah, so my gosh, it’s so great to have you here. I always start with really wanting to ask you the questions about what brought you to this point in time? What got you to this point after 30 years of starting this personal transformation program for thought leaders and action leaders all over the world? What got you into this work and tell me about what got you to today?
00:02:01 Cathy: Well, to start with, wind back the clock 30 years. And where I was at that point in my… I was at a choice point in my life where I wanted a second career. And I was really curious about passion and purpose. So I felt like I had done, had up until that point, done really good work in the world. And all of that said, it just felt to me like I had a bigger calling, something that I was supposed to do more with and more in service. So I thought the thing I likened it to is putting your, you know, phone on call waiting.
00:02:45 Cathy: And when I unclicked that, it was 1992 and coaching was just starting as a career for personal development. I was like, “Whoa. That sounds interesting.” So in the early years, there were pioneer years, 30 years ago, I studied with some early, some very early people in the coaching field. And that’s how I, and the minute I did, I just knew there was that inner knowing that I, that this was my next path.
00:03:19 Christy: Amazing. What did you do before you stepped into the coaching arena?
00:03:23 Cathy: I was a dental hygienist.
00:03:27 Christy: Wow. I did not know this about you. I love that.
00:03:30 Cathy: Yeah, it was, I wanted to be a dentist, but you can tell by my age that they didn’t accept women into dental school. I went into dental hygiene and had a great career with that as a teacher. I taught in that field. And what it did was it gave me, you know how we all look at our lives, so everything we, where we sit now, everything we did before this was a preparation for us.
00:04:02 Christy: Everything that happens up to that point, right? It’s just information and fodder for the course of what’s next, yes.
00:04:08 Cathy: Yes, and so what I in the dental side, what I learned was physiology really well. And that plays in later to the tools that I developed in coaching was because I understand how the body works. And when I realized that in coaching, we are, we have embodied thought. So it helped me understand the whole connection between what I called lights on. And I was the pioneer in that it’s ubiquitous now and that’s the good news. I understand exactly physiologically what happens in our body when we have a positive thought and it releases endorphins, like that and oxytocin. So the two career paths came together beautifully.
00:05:03 Christy: Yeah, indeed. I love that. So we know that more probably as somatic work today, what’s happening in the body, we actually can use that tendency. But I’m just curious, what are some examples of how do you know when somebody is having a positive thought and when somebody is having a negative thought?
00:05:22 Cathy: Well, it is very obvious because lights on, which is the code word that I’m going to use for energy coming into the body. And it looks like radiance. It feels like excited, calm energy, and it acts like flow. So there’s a way that it all comes together. So when I started coaching, there I was, flying by the seat of my pants. There weren’t any real tools in early coaching. And I knew that when I was talking with people, I would notice their whole body would change and I see what we now call lights on.
00:06:03 Cathy: So I innovated a technique to film them before a coaching interview and after, so they can see the change in their physiology when they lit up, so that they understood that it was their positive thoughts that we were discussing that changed their physiology. So basically, proof positive of the mind-body connection.
00:06:30 Christy: Yeah. And I’ve seen that demonstrated in your workshop, your shift workshop, particularly when you actually show pictures of people before and that you can see the effect. You’ve done this with me. Like one side of my face was droopy, like one eye was more close than another. And then after and we do your amazing work and others light up and I light up. There’s this whole resonance on my face and even the third eye chakra starts to illuminate. You can actually see a light in the center of the forehead, right?
00:07:00 Cathy: Yes, you can. And that is because the pineal gland has picked up, it’s a serotonin receptor and it had picks it up and then radiates it out. And that’s why we know that passion and purpose create a radiance, a high frequency radiance of light. Yeah, and it’s just, it feels so good. People, I would say, Christy, over the years have said, it feels like I came home to myself.
00:07:33 Christy: Yeah, yeah. And I’ve been working with you for a few years now and I certainly know that for myself. The feeling that when I get lit up about something and I am like all in, like everything in my body is resonating with what’s true and what’s a yes for me above the line in your language, I can feel it. And I’m so much more motivated to step forward into something even if I don’t know how to do it, if I have the light on feeling in my body about it.
00:08:02 Cathy: Yes. And it’s that physiological connection that I have now come to call our inner guidance system just like the guidance system in our vehicles or our phone, that essentially it says, here’s where I am and where I wanna go, I’ll light up, my physiology will tell me that, and then we create the action steps to support it. And that is what you were just saying. Then you know in your body is like, another way to think about it, I get, I call it a body, yes. Your body’s yes, that’s it. Let’s go this way. We might not know the end of that story, and we know what direction we’re going in.
00:08:53 Christy: Speaking of direction, another tool that you offer, which I absolutely love, because I love to teach flow in my own work, and this idea of oars up, baby, like put your boat in the water and let the river take you because it’s knowing where it goes. And you have this whole river analogy that you use, that you created that is absolutely brilliant. And I don’t think we have time to go into the whole model, but I’m just curious if you could speak a little bit about the river and what you discerned when you put that together in your awareness and building your tools.
00:09:25 Cathy: Well, the river image is a map for flow. So like all rivers in real life, they start somewhere and they go, they meander, they go fast, they have twists and turns and eddys, places where people get stuck. And I was able through divine inspiration to hear in my head a river. You know how a musician says they hear a song in their head? Well, I heard a river. It was that, so I started to draw it out and that’s how it came to be. And the stations along the river, I call it a map to our soul’s journey.
00:10:10 Cathy: It are so in real life, so real. I mean, we all know what it’s like to get caught in an eddy and swirl and swirl. We know what it’s like when we go fast, when all of a sudden everything lines up and works. So in river language, we call that the whoosh effect.
00:10:30 Christy: The whoosh.
00:10:33 Cathy: The whoosh, and it gets whooshy when you’re aligned, when there’s synchronicity, when your vision is embodied and lights on and gives you the actions that you need, it gets whooshy. And that’s fun, it makes it fun.
00:10:51 Christy: And acceleration occurring from alignment is one of the wooshes, that’s how you define it on your materials. It’s wonderful. You have so, this material is so extraordinary and it’s complex, you know, it’s simple and it’s idea below the line, above the line, flow, river, those types of things, but the depth of information and gifts that your work brings is just phenomenal. And I, before we get too far down the line, we want to make sure that people will know how to find you, will give that information at the end to get more information about these tools and your work on your website.
00:11:26 Christy: So before we take a break, I’m going to talk to you about the Clarity Attention Choice Point Guide. I have these tools that sit, I’m a visual learner, so I have all my tools that sit above my computer screen in my home in Denver, and I have your materials with me here in my Florida home, and I’m just looking at this. And I just want you to introduce it. And then I wanna talk a little bit more, and we can use my color as an example, if you want, and I can share about that myself. But tell me about the Clarity Attention Choice Point Guide.
00:11:56 Cathy: Well, it is a map of sorts. It’s a guide. And what it does is it is based on how we embody our thoughts. So it has each column, there’s sort of columns in it, and it has ideas and words that are related to our high thought, highest frequency thought. So it’s based on wave patterns of thought. I mean, this sounds, I’m trying to make it sound really simple.
00:12:28 Christy: I know, I know. It’s brilliant. That’s what I can tell you. It’s brilliant. But it’s I think it’d be hard to describe on a podcast So let me do your magic can all see if I can add to here.
00:12:40 Cathy: Yes, so each thought so there’s layers of thoughts. So we have thoughts that I’m gonna say are in our head and that those thoughts come down through our body Into our heart and it inform our heart and then they go through the rest of our body down to our feet. So it’s a whole body alignment of where thoughts can live in our body. So let’s back up because maybe we’ve got two underlying assumptions that we want to be clear about. One is the attention guide is based on the fact that our body is the landing spot for our soul.
00:13:20 Cathy: So when we decide to incarnate, then we come into these physical bodies and the whole body, we have heads and hearts and actions. And I was able to devise and innovate a system measuring the vibrational frequency of a high thought versus a heart level thought versus a grounding level thought. Going through the body on an Eastern chakra system, it really lets people have a guidance to where the thoughts are important to them and how it helps at choice point. Is that simple?
00:14:01 Christy: Yeah, I get it. And let’s even simplify it a little bit more. So below the line, if we say above the line, below the line, the line is pretty neutral, right? It’s where we land in a more neutral state. If we go below the line, we’re really in a negative thought pattern. I would also call that some reactive behavior tendencies. Tendencies are driven in that. In my work, I would call that in the roots, below the system, below the line.
00:14:28 Christy: And then if you go above the line and you reach for a better feeling, sense of yourself, then you get to a new thought or positive thought pattern. And your work is beautiful because you can actually look at the little chart and say, oh, I am feeling, for instance, mine is, I am purple on the scale. So when I am feeling like I’m a victim of something or something happened and shit hit the fan and I’m feeling like I’m in it, I get into this martyrdom place, this place of like, I think it’s happening to me versus me being masterful in the situation.
00:15:03 Christy: And then I have choice points to take myself from that place of being a martyr to something that’s happened into going above the line where I might wanna be a little more courageous, or I might wanna be feeling, into the feeling of gratitude or get some curiosity going. And at my highest level, when I go to the highest reaching place I can go, I go to my self-esteem, that place of probably more authenticity for me, which is my highest self.
00:15:30 Christy: So just looking at the chart, I can say, oh, I’m feeling a little in doubt right now. So if I wanna go to a different place, I can choose above the line and say, I’m gonna be curious about this. What’s possible here? What else is possible? Right?
00:15:45 Cathy: Yes. That’s how it came about as that we needed a tool. So we all intellectually we all know that if we think a positive thought we’re going to have a better outcome. Nope, I don’t think anybody listening whatever question that. What happens though is when you go what we call under the line in that darker into your roots as you say, what happens is we cannot actually physiologically in our brain we cannot access the higher level thought.
00:16:21 Cathy: So here I was working with all of these people, like your listeners and you and me, who would get stuck in a negative thought pattern, old, usually an old pattern, and we couldn’t find, we call it loss of executive function, but we couldn’t find the higher thing to balance that to negative and make a remedy out of it. So we call that a thought remedy. And like you just demonstrated for everybody, you looked where you were under the line, where am I stuck?
00:16:57 Cathy: And then you chose an opposite thought. So you didn’t have to have executive function running. You could immediately make the change. And some of the early scientific studies said that it happens in 125,000ths of a second.
00:17:17 Christy: Unbelievable.
00:17:19 Cathy: It’s so fast. It’s just so fast. So you don’t have to worry about being stuck there. But that’s how I had to invent that guide. Because our clients were stuck. They’d say like, oh, my, you know, like you said, Wow, you know, I’m feeling like a martyr, like I’ve given myself to others. Well, what’s the opposite of that? And then just shift your thought. And that’s where that that guide we see that guide all over. I mean–
00:17:51 Christy: Yeah, it is an amazing guide. All right. Cathy, this is a good point. We need to take a break. We’ll be right back with Cathy Hawk and be asking her about her wisdom she wants to share with you when we come back on Second Chances with Christy Belz’s podcast.
00:18:09 Christy: This is your host, Christy Belz. Many of the people you meet on my podcast have participated in my online curriculum called Uproot. 00:18:47 Christy: Welcome back. Oh my gosh. What an incredible conversation with Cathy Hawk, founder of Clarity, this operating tool and system that I find incredibly, incredibly powerful. And I personally use it in my own life. Cathy is my Clarity coach. And I lean on her on the regular to tap in, find out what lights me up and keep me moving in a direction where I’m in the flow of my life and doing things that I like to do and love to do and I delegate the rest. Cathy’s taught me that.
00:19:24 Christy: Cathy, let’s talk about some, I always ask my guests because this is Sage Wisdom, this segment of my podcast. And I’m talking to women who are close to 80 and you were about there, aren’t you?
00:19:38 Cathy: Getting there, yes.
00:19:29 Christy: Yeah. And you have so much wisdom. You’ve been doing this work for 30 years, you’ve touched so many lives and created so many powerful tools. And I just, in this, the second half of this podcast, I’d love to talk to you about what are some thoughts and sage wisdom that you would share with this audience, things that you would want these listeners to know that you’ve learned on your journey.
00:20:01 Cathy: Well, when I look back, I would say there would be three powerful things that I’ve learned over the years. One is to do whatever it takes to find out your passion and purpose. And so there are times in life when you need to stop doing what you’re doing and reimagine things. Now there are many awesome tools on the planet to help you do that. Great teachers. We couldn’t be at a better time on Earth’s university for transformative tools than we are right this very moment.
00:20:39 Christy: And I’ll just say, amen to that. Amen to that, yes.
00:20:44 Cathy: So here we are. So one, get your passion and purpose. Once you find it, do it as if your life depends upon it. Now I know that sounds pretty dramatic, but let me say what I mean by your life, your vital life energy, your chi that you come into this world with when you’re doing things that are negative, that drain you, that are, I’m gonna say, off purpose, what happens is you really get physically impacted by it. You get exhausted. I mean, look at our culture, the American culture, which has, I’m gonna say, invented chronic fatigue syndrome from doing stuff over and over again that doesn’t light us up. And that’s why I say the second thing, your life depends upon it means your vital energy.
00:21:37 Cathy: So that you can be at my, I’m a 78 now. So how can I rewrite how people do their 70s and their 80s and their 90s because I’m running my vital energy through my body with the choices and the actions that I’m taking. And then that is the third thing. And that is have a strategic plan that we call Lights on the Coma Bridge Plan. Yo get you from where you are now to the next step on your journey.
00:22:11 Cathy: And some people think that that has to be like, I gotta know everything for the rest of my life. No, what you need to know is the next lights on action step. Once you get there, your body will get revitalized. You’ll feel that energy come back and you’ll be then able to move on and keep moving forward and create flow. So three things, do whatever it takes to find out your passion and purpose. Once you find it, do it with focused joy. That’s what I mean by intensity. And third is do your action steps so that you’re moving forward all the time with vital life energy.
00:22:58 Christy: Absolutely. So one of the things I hear, and I am sure you’ve pushed up against us against the years is that people, we get really identified with being the doer and having to do things. If I don’t do it, it’s not gonna get done. It’s not gonna get done well, right? So we hang on to things that really don’t serve us so that we’re not very good at, for instance. And people don’t know how to let that stuff go or how to delegate that. I’m just curious if you have experiences that, from clients that you can share about how to help people understand that it’s okay not to do everything. There are certain things that light you up and those are the things that are yours to do.
00:23:38 Cathy: Well, you know, that choice, the first one is to be an energy detective for yourself.
00:23:43 Christy: Energy detective, yeah.
00:23:45 Cathy: So think through yourself, your day. What am I doing that’s draining my energy, which we call life up? And what am I doing that enlivens me? And sometimes it’s a neutral. So if you think of a, on a scale of one to 10, if it’s about a five, and most tasks that we routine tasks that we do are around five, they’re not, you know, draining us. So start to think of your life that way on a scale of one to 10, what am I doing? And I arbitrarily use 7.5 and above. Anything over that, anything that between that and until I’m like, yep, that’s gotta be, it’s holding light and energy. So that’s part of my bigger picture.
00:24:32 Cathy: And then the things that are less, we have to find someone else to do them that it’s their tan. And I think that’s where I got over my self-importance years ago was what I don’t love to do. And that’s some of the technology, the bookkeeping and all of the accounting and my company is handled by somebody else because they trained me and I’m intellectually capable of understanding it, but I don’t love it. So, and there’s someone that does love it. So let them shine. I think the kindest thing we can do is to let people get to their gift. That’s not my gift. And you know what, we’re trained, you know, our culture, do it even if it kills you. That’s energy talk. You know, that’s negative energy talk.
00:25:30 Christy: So it will kill you if you keep doing it.
00:25:33 Cathy: Mine is that. And the other thing I think too, that’s fun is, is they, I know growing up, I always heard, save the best for last. Oops. That energy, if you save the best till the end of the day or when you’re exhausted and you don’t have anything to give to your gift, how about if we rewrite that story and we say do our lights on things or save the best for first?
00:26:01 Christy: Use the best for first.
00:26:02 Cathy: That way we can go into the whole rest of our day empowered and energized.
00:26:08 Christy: Yeah, I love that. I love to tell a story. So I have had a cleaning person that has worked with me for over 25 years. She’s worked with me longer than my son before my Charlie was born. And she loves to clean. And every time I walk into my house after she cleans it, I have the most amazing feeling. And she’s done something remarkable. Like she’s moved something around that I would have never thought about doing, or she’s rearranged something, or she’s just done something just, and she does it so well.
00:26:43 Christy: And I have referred her, I take really good care of her. But you know what, I decided a long time ago that I didn’t want to clean the toilets or vacuum, and that my time would be better spent doing other things. And so, my Monica has been my life source for keeping my house in order and keeping things neat and tidy for me, which I love, but it doesn’t light me up but it certainly lights her up. She loves it.
00:27:08 Christy: So you say, and I talk about your work often in my work, and that’s that, you know, just because it seems like you have to do it, sometimes it’s better off to find somebody else to do it. Even if it’s a stretch sometimes in the beginning, your life energy is gonna benefit from that. And as you said, the other people are gonna be served because you’re giving them the gift to do what they love to do. So I, yeah, I love your work, Cathy, you know that.
00:27:36 Cathy: We have time for a quick story about a blueberry and strawberry field.
00:27:43 Christy: Absolutely, yeah.
00:27:44 Cathy: Right, so I got a call from a person at an emergency room and they’re there on their Blackberry, so a few years ago. And in the background, I heard a doc, I said, where are you? I’m in emergency room, I think I’m having a panic attack. And I’m just trying to get my work done. And I heard the doctor in the background say, put that thing down. And then I was like, okay, you need to put this down. You are your frantic, anxiety ridden desire to just work, work, work, work, work is making you sick, physically sick. And thank God, you know, not many people end up in the ER.
00:28:28 Cathy: So anyway, once he got out. And we re-imagined things. What he ended up doing, so he owned a home health delivery business, and he had inherited it from his family. In the world of entrepreneur, that’s not unusual that people take over family businesses. And it was not his calling. It wasn’t his life. And when we did the interview, I asked him that famous question that we all need to ask ourselves. If I were Santa Claus and you could do anything that you want, what would you do?
00:29:03 Cathy: And he said, I would own an organic blueberry and strawberry farm and I would make it my life. Well, big lights. And the good news is he was able to transfer that company and is now a very well-known, very successful organic fruit grower, actually. It expanded. And it took that, let’s hope for all of us and everyone listening that it doesn’t take a trip to the ER room to to wake us up, but sometimes those are wake-up calls and that it doesn’t take that that we can do it in advance of that by finding our purpose focusing on it and taking the action. So thank you for letting me share that story.
00:29:52 Christy: I love that story
00:29:53 Cathy: It’s the only time I’ve ever had a client call me from the ER room. I’m like–
00:29:58 Christy: Thank God. Yeah, I have another, I have another point I want to share with the audience. Something I learned from you and I actually wrote about it in my book. And that is because my pattern right below the line behavior is that place of martyrdom overdoing being nice. And I remember working with you and you were coaching me one day and I was having a really tough time with some relationships where I felt like I wasn’t being valued or seen or appreciated and what I was doing or contributing. And I said, why is this happening?
00:30:34 Christy: And you said to me, because you’re too nice. And I was like, what? What are you talking about? Like, yeah, I’m nice. I’m a nice person. I am nice. And you said, no, Christy, it’s not that you are nice is that you act nice. And I was like, oh, and it just landed in the right way at the right time. And all of a sudden I realized, and I think he pulled it out. You said, you know, you continue to do things that don’t really your language light you up, but you do it so that you can support other people so that people like you. I mean, all this icky gross, like it almost made me gag after we talked about it. I was like, oh, yuck. And when you put the light on it, I was like, that is so true. And I, for years had been spending so much time supporting other people’s visions and work that it was early at that time, Cathy, that I made the switch and decided to really build my own business and to write my book and to start my own pie and really put my time and energy and value into what was mine versus what I could do so that other people would like me or that, you know, I felt like I could make a difference. That was a really valuable lesson for me. And I really believe our listeners will get that because this whole nice girl syndrome that is epidemic and it really doesn’t serve us. So thank you for that, that teaching and that lesson.
00:32:04 Cathy: You are so welcome. The nice girl syndrome is, is draining a lot of people. So how can women, more particularly, learn to say no above the line, to say it with clarity and compassion and truly, you know, I’d love to help you, but right now, the timing isn’t good for me or whatever. Whatever is necessary, whatever we need to really be clear about what’s going to work and what’s not. We call that sacred selfishness. And that’s obviously a play on words, sacred self fullness, so that you’re full.
00:32:49 Cathy: And then what you, the things that you do say yes to, they’re blessed, they’re radiant, they’re amazing, and they’re almost magical in their results because they are at that high frequency of service that is not a wounded service. It’s, it’s done from a high, high. Well, from your higher self, your higher soul.
00:33:17 Christy: Yeah. I love that too. It reminds me of Brene Brown’s work, who I’m a big fan of, because I’m a social worker as well. She says, clear is kind. Clear is kind. And I remember that, like clear is kind, when I can be clear about what I’m thinking or how I’m feeling, and do it from the place of clarity versus the wishy washy, you know, ickiness that I used to play in more often. It feels really good. It’s really lights on to say, you know, that doesn’t work for me right now. Ask me, you know, maybe check with me later. Maybe I can do something for you later. Maybe I can do X, Y, or Z.
00:33:49 Christy: One of my clients taught me how to say yes with a, or say no with a yes. You know, no, I’m not able to do that right now, but I could do, you know, maybe something later, something like that. So, well, I could chat with you all day long. There’s just so much, so much that you offer the world and your work and your gifts. And let’s tell our audience how they can find you and how they can explore a little bit more of the clarity work and find your books and all the wonderful stuff that you have to offer. How does the audience find you?
00:34:21 Cathy: The best way is through my website, getclarity.com. And on that is my phone number. And so if I do welcome calls from people who have gotten the information from someone like you, Christy, who I value and also know is doing really good work in the world. And I know sometimes people hesitate about calling a visionary teacher like me, but please never feel that way. You can always mail me, [email protected], and I will for sure make it my best, yes, to get back with you and see if I can answer a question for you.
00:35:04 Christy: I love it. Thank you so much for taking the time and being with me today. You know, I just adore you. I really appreciate you and the work that you do in the world and the ways that you have impacted me in my life. Cathy, you are a blessing and just so blessed to have you on the journey. So thank you. Thank you. We’ll put notes in the show notes. You’ll be able to find Cathy in the show notes of this podcast as well. Blessings all. Take care, we’ll see you next time on Second Chances with Christy Belz. Bye.
00:35:40 Christy: It is the joy of my life to showcase the voices of people and the messy details of life’s journey. As you have experienced, my guests are thriving with purpose and style, but that does not mean that their life is easy and without challenges. I’ve dedicated my life to you and your journey.
